Will a Breast Lift Make My Breasts Smaller?

Correcting the common concern of breast sag (medically referred to as “breast ptosis”), can often be accomplished with a customized breast lift to provide a firmer, younger-looking breast profile. Removing excess tissue, fat, and skin and elevating breasts to a perkier position on the chest wall can not only restore a more balanced physique but also improve self-confidence. With that in mind, women considering breast lift surgery frequently wonder if the surgical changes made during a breast lift will make their breasts appear smaller. Below, our New Jersey plastic surgeon, Jordan P. Farkas, MD, explains what can actually be expected from a breast lift procedure and if combining other procedures may help to further achieve your aesthetic goals.

In general, a breast lift is designed to address signs of sagging and “drooping” in the breasts, and is not intended to reduce the volume or size of the breasts. With that said, the outcome of a breast lift typically can result in a relatively smaller, more compact breast profile due to the loss of excess tissue and surrounding skin, but this should not make a dramatic difference.

If a smaller breast size is desired—along with a lifted breast appearance—the patient may be a candidate for a breast reduction. This procedure may result in some degree of lift, depending on the severity of the ptosis. If more substantial lifting is needed, both breast lift and breast reduction can be combined for more comprehensive treatment. Alternatively, if the patient’s goal is to lift their breasts as well as increase the size or fullness of their breasts, a breast augmentation and lift (sometimes called a breast lift with implants) can enhance the volume of the breasts with silicone or saline breast implants while restoring them to a more youthful, firmer appearance.
